WHO considers antimicrobial resistance to be one of the biggest threats to public health. The use of antibiotics for both animals and humans is a global issue. To limit the global occurrence of antimicrobial resistance it is important to identify the risk factors which contribute to the development of resistance. Research in antimicrobial resistance is the basis for advising authorities and organizations on how to reduce the level of resistance

Strengthened focus on multidrug-resistant bacteria in Africa

DTU National Food Institute is assisting African countries in strengthening antibiotic resistance surveillance and reducing inappropriate antibiotic use. The project, named SeqAfrica, has launched the second phase of its work in Sub-Saharan Africa with a £3.6 million (DDK 31 million) grant from the United Kingdom Department of Health and Social Care’ Fleming Fund.

Increasing antibiotic resistance in Danish production animals

Antibiotic resistance in bacteria from slaughtered pigs and calves has increased in 2023. This is shown in the DANMAP report’s summary of antibiotic resistance in bacteria from healthy animals, prepared by DTU National Food Institute. The level of resistance is still lower than in most EU countries.

Improved epidemic monitoring via sewage
